How to Check Liver Function at Home

If you have been searching for ways to check your liver function at home, you are probably trying to work out whether something you have noticed — tiredness that will not lift, an uncomfortable feeling under your right ribs, or perhaps a change in your urine colour — is worth taking seriously. That instinct is a good one.
The honest answer is that you cannot assess your liver function accurately at home. The liver does not have nerve endings that produce pain, and it can lose a significant proportion of its capacity before any obvious symptoms appear. What you can do at home is notice certain warning signs that warrant investigation, and make an informed decision about whether to book a liver function blood test.
This article explains both — the signs to watch for, and what a proper test actually involves.
Signs Your Liver Might Not Be Working Properly
These symptoms do not always point to liver disease, and none of them is diagnostic on its own. But if you recognise several of them together, or if any one of them is new and persisting, they deserve investigation.
- Jaundice. A yellow tint to the whites of your eyes, or to your skin, is one of the clearest signs that bilirubin — a pigment the liver normally processes — is building up in your bloodstream. It is often the first visible sign of liver dysfunction and should never be ignored.
- Dark urine. When excess bilirubin is excreted via the kidneys, urine turns a dark amber or tea colour. If you notice this alongside pale or clay-coloured stools, the combination strongly suggests bile flow is being disrupted somewhere in the liver or bile ducts.
- Pale or clay-coloured stools. Bile gives stools their brown colour. A sustained change to pale or grey stools can indicate that bile is not reaching the gut as it should.
- Persistent fatigue. Liver disease is among the many causes of fatigue, but when it is accompanied by other symptoms on this list, it takes on greater significance. Up to half of people with early liver disease report unexplained tiredness as a leading symptom.
- Discomfort in the upper right abdomen. The liver sits beneath the right ribcage. A dull ache or sense of pressure in that area — particularly if it is new and persistent — can reflect liver inflammation or enlargement.
- Unexplained itching. Pruritus with no visible rash is a surprisingly common liver symptom. It occurs because bile salts that the liver should be clearing instead accumulate in the skin.
- Easy bruising or prolonged bleeding. The liver produces most of the clotting factors your blood depends on. When liver function is impaired, even minor knocks can cause pronounced bruises, and small cuts may bleed longer than expected.
It is also worth knowing that many people with significant liver disease — including early fatty liver disease, hepatitis B, and early-stage cirrhosis — have none of these symptoms at all. That is why targeted blood testing matters, rather than waiting for the body to send obvious signals.
Home Liver Test Kits: What They Actually Measure
Home finger-prick blood test kits for liver function are widely available in the UK, typically priced between £30 and £70. They measure many of the same markers as a standard hospital or clinic liver panel — usually ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, bilirubin, albumin, and total protein. The sample is taken via a finger-prick lancet, collected into a micro-tube, and posted to a laboratory, with results returned digitally within one to three days.
These kits have genuine value as a starting point. However, there are meaningful limitations to understand before relying on them:
- Capillary versus venous blood. Finger-prick samples use capillary blood, which can differ from venous blood in certain markers. Most validated tests account for this, but it introduces a degree of variability that laboratory venepuncture does not.
- No ALT on some lateral-flow kits. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) — arguably the most important individual marker for liver cell damage — is measured accurately in laboratory-analysed kits but is absent from some simpler dipstick-style kits. Always check which markers a kit includes.
- Results without clinical context. A lab result flagged as outside the normal range is only the beginning of the clinical conversation. Age, sex, body weight, medications, and recent alcohol intake all influence interpretation. A borderline result in isolation can be unnecessarily alarming, while a “normal” result does not rule out liver disease in someone with the right risk profile and symptoms.
- Regulatory oversight varies. A 2025 BMJ review of self-tests sold in the UK found that a significant proportion had unclear accuracy claims or were validated using inappropriate study designs. Not all kits are equal.
In short: a home kit can give you a reasonable initial picture, but any abnormal result — or a normal result in someone with symptoms or risk factors — warrants a formal venous blood test and a GP review.
What a Proper Liver Function Blood Test Covers
When a GP orders a liver function test (LFT) panel, it includes a standardised set of markers drawn from a venous sample and analysed in an accredited laboratory. Understanding what each one measures helps you make sense of your results.
ALT (Alanine Aminotransferase)
The most liver-specific marker on the panel. ALT is an enzyme found predominantly in liver cells. When those cells are damaged or inflamed — by alcohol, viral hepatitis, fatty liver disease, or certain medications — ALT leaks into the bloodstream. Normal range: roughly 0–40 IU/L. Values significantly above this, particularly anything above 1,000 IU/L, can indicate acute injury and require urgent review.
AST (Aspartate Aminotransferase)
Similar to ALT but also found in muscle, heart, and kidney tissue, making it slightly less liver-specific. An AST:ALT ratio above 2:1 can be a useful pointer towards alcohol-related liver disease. Normal range is also broadly 0–40 IU/L, though laboratory reference ranges vary.
ALP (Alkaline Phosphatase)
Mainly found in the bile ducts of the liver and in bone. A raised ALP alongside a raised GGT suggests cholestasis — impaired bile flow. ALP elevated in isolation without an accompanying rise in GGT may point to a bone rather than liver cause. Reference ranges vary by laboratory and method.
GGT (Gamma-Glutamyl Transferase)
An enzyme found in the liver and bile ducts. GGT is particularly sensitive to alcohol: stopping drinking for four weeks will typically normalise GGT in people whose elevation is alcohol-related. It is also raised in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD, now more commonly called metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, or MASLD). Normal range: 0–50 IU/L.
Bilirubin
Produced when red blood cells break down. The liver conjugates bilirubin and excretes it in bile. Elevated bilirubin — particularly the direct or conjugated fraction — points to problems with the liver’s processing or excretion of bile. Normal range: 5–21 micromol/L. Jaundice becomes clinically visible around 35–50 micromol/L.
Albumin
The liver’s main protein product. Albumin has a long half-life (around 20 days), so it is most useful as a marker of chronic rather than acute liver function. A low albumin alongside other abnormal liver markers suggests the liver’s synthetic function — its ability to manufacture vital proteins — is compromised. Normal range: 35–50 g/L.
Total Protein
The combined measurement of albumin and globulins. Abnormal total protein levels can indicate liver dysfunction, kidney disease, or immune system disorders, and is interpreted alongside the individual components.
These markers together form what is commonly called the LFT panel. Interpreted as a pattern — rather than individual numbers in isolation — they allow a GP to distinguish between hepatocellular damage (liver cell injury, as seen with ALT/AST rises), cholestatic disease (bile duct obstruction, as suggested by ALP/GGT rises), and impaired synthetic function (as reflected by albumin and clotting studies). Who Should Get Tested
A liver function test is not just for people with symptoms. The following groups have elevated baseline risk and may benefit from a proactive check:
- Regular or heavy drinkers. The Chief Medical Officers’ low-risk guideline is no more than 14 units per week spread across at least three days. People who consistently exceed this — or who have periods of heavy drinking — are at elevated risk of alcohol-related liver disease. GGT in particular tends to reflect recent alcohol intake, and a single test can be a useful and objective conversation-starter.
- People taking hepatotoxic medications. Long-term use of statins (used to lower cholesterol), paracetamol at high or sustained doses, certain antibiotics, and many complementary and herbal supplements can all affect liver enzymes. If you are taking any of these regularly, periodic monitoring makes sense.
- People with obesity or metabolic syndrome. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is now the most common cause of liver disease in the UK, driven in large part by rising rates of obesity and type 2 diabetes. Many people with fatty liver disease have no symptoms; abnormal ALT or GGT is often the only early indicator.
- Family history of liver disease. Certain liver conditions — including hereditary haemochromatosis, Wilson’s disease, and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency — run in families. If a first-degree relative has been diagnosed with liver disease of unclear cause, it is worth asking a GP whether screening is appropriate.
- Unexplained symptoms. Fatigue, right-sided abdominal discomfort, itching, or any of the signs listed earlier in this article, particularly if they have persisted for more than a few weeks.
- Anyone wanting a baseline. Some people simply want to understand their liver health as part of a wider health check. A liver function panel is included in many private health screening packages and provides a useful data point for future comparison.
How to Keep Your Liver Healthy
The liver is a remarkably resilient organ with substantial regenerative capacity. Most of the things that protect it are not complicated.
Reduce Alcohol Intake
Alcohol is the most common preventable cause of liver disease in the UK. Even moderate reductions — if you currently drink above the low-risk guidelines — have measurable effects on liver enzymes. GGT typically normalises within four to eight weeks of significant reduction or abstinence. If you find it difficult to cut down, a GP can help with this without judgement.
Manage Your Weight
The link between excess body weight and fatty liver disease is direct and dose-dependent. Even a 5–10% reduction in body weight in people with established fatty liver disease has been shown to reduce liver fat and inflammation. Exercise independently reduces liver fat, separate from its effect on weight.
Be Thoughtful About Medications and Supplements
Paracetamol is safe at recommended doses, but becomes hepatotoxic in overdose or with regular high dosing, particularly in people who also drink alcohol. Many herbal and traditional medicines — including some marketed as liver tonics — can themselves cause liver damage. If you take regular over-the-counter medications, always stay within the recommended daily dose, and tell your GP about any supplements you use.
Exercise Regularly
Both aerobic exercise and resistance training reduce liver fat in people with MASLD, independent of weight change. Aiming for 150 minutes of moderate activity per week is the standard NHS recommendation, and even modest increases above a sedentary baseline have a meaningful effect on liver health.
Vaccinations
Hepatitis A and hepatitis B are both vaccine-preventable causes of liver disease. If you travel frequently, work in healthcare, or have not been vaccinated, it is worth checking your status — this can be done as part of a general practice appointment.
When to Act Promptly
Most liver disease develops slowly, and routine testing gives plenty of time to intervene. However, certain symptoms should prompt same-day or emergency review rather than a routine appointment: new-onset jaundice, especially with fever or severe abdominal pain; confusion or altered behaviour alongside liver symptoms; or vomiting blood. These may indicate acute liver failure or a biliary emergency.
The Clearest Answer
You cannot check your liver function accurately at home using symptoms alone, because the liver can sustain significant damage silently. Home blood test kits offer a useful but imperfect first step.
