ADHD assessment and treatment with our consultant psychiatrist

ADHD assessment and treatment with our in-house psychiatrist

Clear answers. Sensible treatment. No conveyor-belt diagnosis.

If you have spent years feeling distracted, overwhelmed, restless, disorganised or exhausted by the effort of keeping up, it may be time to look more closely at ADHD. At The Lagom Clinic, we offer private ADHD assessment and treatment in Bristol with a calm, thorough, whole-person approach. A proper assessment should look at your symptoms now, how they showed up earlier in life, how they affect work, study, relationships and daily functioning, and whether other conditions could also be part of the picture. Treatment can include practical strategies, workplace or study adjustments, talking therapies, lifestyle changes and medication when appropriate.

A clearer answer

ADHD is not just about concentration. It can show up as chronic procrastination, emotional overwhelm, impulsive decisions, difficulty finishing tasks, constant lateness, poor organisation, restlessness, burnout, or a lifetime of feeling that everyday life takes more effort than it should.

It can also overlap with anxiety, low mood, sleep problems and other mental health conditions. That is why a specialist assessment matters. Our aim is not to rush to a label. It is to understand what is really going on and help you move forward with clarity.

What an ADHD assessment looks at

A specialist ADHD assessment is more than a questionnaire. It should build a full picture of how your mind works and how symptoms affect real life. That includes current symptoms, childhood and developmental history, work or education, relationships, mental health, physical health, family context, and anything else that may be influencing attention, energy, mood or behaviour.

We take time to look at:

  • attention, focus, impulsivity, restlessness and emotional regulation
  • school, work and home life
  • stress, burnout, sleep and routine
  • previous mental health history and any past treatment
  • whether ADHD is the right diagnosis, or only part of the picture

Treatment that fits real life

If ADHD is diagnosed, the next step is not a one-size-fits-all prescription. For some people, medication is a key part of treatment. For others, the biggest gains come from better structure, education, therapy, coaching, sleep work, exercise, nutrition and practical changes to work or study.

ADHD medicines should be initiated and monitored by a specialist, but medication is only one part of good care. The goal is not to make you feel different for a few hours. The goal is to help you function better, think more clearly and feel more in control of your life.

If it is not ADHD

Sometimes the most valuable outcome of an assessment is real clarity. Understanding your neurotype will help give you an understanding of your symptoms. You may discover you have traits of the condition, or you may be neurotypical but experiencing problems with concentration caused by other issues.

Our ADHD assessments will explore the root causes of symptoms and can provide treatments for other conditions that can mimic ADHD such as menopause, sleep apnoea or anxiety disorders.

A lifestyle-led approach to ADHD care

At The Lagom Clinic, we do not treat mental health in isolation from the rest of your life. Sleep, movement, food, stress, work patterns, alcohol, relationships and physical health all affect how you feel and function. That is why our ADHD care is designed to be evidence-based, practical and rooted in the bigger picture, not just symptom management.

I’m a Consultant General Adult Psychiatrist with over twenty years’ experience, I specialise in helping adults with ADHD, depression and anxiety. My approach is warm, collaborative and evidence‑based. I combine the appropriate use of medication with lifestyle interventions, so that treatment feels personal, practical and effective.

I completed my medical degree at the University of Nottingham before training at the Institute of Psychiatry at the South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. During this time, I completed a Graduate Certificate in Family Therapy with distinction and undertook a fellowship in Medical Education at the Tavistock & Portman, leading an international research project with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, resulting in multiple publications and conference presentations. I am also certified in lifestyle medicine, an area I am deeply passionate about and have developed group and individual lifestyle interventions to support mental health.

Over the years, I’ve developed a structured yet compassionate clinical style. I use validated diagnostic tools, and track outcomes carefully so that treatment is transparent and grounded in evidence. My goal is always the same: to help people understand what’s going on, feel more in control, and move toward a healthier, more fulfilling life.

In my private practice, I offer comprehensive Adult ADHD assessments, ADHD treatment and titration, and psychiatric consultations for depression and anxiety. I work both online and in person, and I’m recognised by most major insurers.

Outside of work, I value spending time with my family and friends, and enjoy walking, cold-water swimming and yoga.

FAQs

What happens at an ADHD assessment?

Your psychiatrist will explore your symptoms, history, day-to-day functioning and any other factors that may be contributing. The aim is to understand whether ADHD fits, whether something else also needs attention, and what support is most likely to help.

Not necessarily. Some people benefit greatly from medication, while others prefer a non-medication route or a combined approach. Good treatment is personalised.

Yes. ADHD can overlap with other mental health conditions, and some symptoms can look similar. That is one reason specialist assessment matters.

That is exactly why an assessment is useful. The aim is clarity, not a rushed label. If ADHD is not the right diagnosis, the appointment should still bring you closer to the right explanation and the right plan.
